PERMACULTURE AND MARKET GARDENS

Farming atop a 2,200 foot mountain in New York’s Catskills offers a short yet fecund growing season where the markets are aplenty and the “out of towners” flock to the regions paradisiacal swimming holes, cideries, and scenic retreats.

Mossy Stone Farms brings the community onto the farm for volunteer days, neighborhood cookouts, CSA pick ups, and children’s programs. An eight year old resilience project fashioned as a hub for education, summer retreats and delicious seed-to-plate dinners, the farm started and manages the mountains’ first and only farmers market in 2019. Building a robust local food system in this remote and rural area is easier said then done, but when the soil is well fed, people’s will is sure to follow.
